Visitor Information | Medical Center (2024)

We believe the support of family and friends is important to healing while patients are in the hospital. Visitors who arrive between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. are asked to check in at the security desk at Critical Care Hospital.

We know visitation restrictions have not been easy. The decision to change our visitation policy was based on the highly infectious nature of the delta variant.

We appreciate your help keeping your loved ones and community safe. Working together, we are confident that these measures will continue to help us get through the COVID-19 pandemic within our facilities while balancing the visitation needs of our patients.

Mask policy

The health and safety of our patients, team members and visitors are critically important. Masking will be optional in all VCU Health hospitals and clinics, except for VCU Medical Center inpatient setting and designated high-risk patient areas.

Visitor policy

Our patient care philosophy depends greatly on engaging family and friends to be part of the healing process. Due to COVID-19, we have reduced the number of visitors permitted for inpatients.

The following visitation restrictions are in place:

No visitors under the age of 18 permitted on inpatient units.

Adult inpatients at VCU Medical Center, including surgical patients, are allowed two adult visitors at a time, 8 a.m.8 p.m. Both adult visitors may visit at the same time.Visitors may change within daytime visiting hours outside of the inpatient unit. One adult visitor can visit for the entirety of the night between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.

COVID-positive adult inpatients at VCU Medical Center are permitted one adult visitor per day. Visitors must visit only the COVID-19 patient and no other patients. To maintain a safe environment, visitors may not travel to other areas of the facility (for example, the cafeteria or gift shop). The adult visitor is permitted for the entirety of the night in the room.

Our commitment to a drug-free campus: What to know ahead of your next appointment

We believe it is in the best interest of our patients, visitors and the community to remain a smoke-free, firearm-free and drug-free campus.

While it is now legal in Virginia for people 21 and older to have small amounts of marijuana for personal use, marijuana remains an illegal substance under federal law.

Since our health system follows federal guidelines pertaining to marijuana, many of our VCU Health policies remain the same.

What this means for patients and visitors:

  • We do not allow the possession or consumption of any amount of marijuana in any VCU Health-owned, operated or leased facility or on our campuses.
  • Please do not bring any amount of marijuana to an appointment or when visiting a loved one.
  • We will ask any patient or visitor found to be in possession of any amount of marijuana or using marijuana while on our premises to remove the substance from our facility and campus setting right away or it will be confiscated and held securely for thirty days before being destroyed.
  • Consuming marijuana in public or offering it to people in public, as a gift or otherwise, is illegal under the law.
