Dear Patron: Please don't scroll past this. The Internet Archive is a nonprofit fighting for universal access to quality information. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads. Instead, we're powered by online donations averaging $15.58. We'd be deeply grateful if you'd join the one in a thousand users that support us financially.
We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute this Friday, we promise it will be put to good use. Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in.

Directed by Walt Disney & Ub Iwerks
Released on November 18, 1928
Though Steamboat Willie was the first cartoon in Mickey's lineup to be released, two cartoons Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho were produced before but released after this cartoon.
The title is a parody of the Buster Keaton film, Steamboat Bill, Jr., also released in 1928.
The signature melody for Steamboat Willie has been used as an introduction for movies by Walt Disney Feature Animation ever since the animation studio's restructured by John Lasseter and Ed Catmull under the name Walt Disney Animation Studios (starting with the movie Meet the Robinsons). It starts out as a blank piece of paper as lines are drawn onto it, recreating the iconic scene from a basic sketch to the final iteration.

Subject: Normalization of animal abuse needed music in 1928.
I do love a good old cartoon like this one, the music is great. But I can't ignore how animal abuse was portrayed as totally normal and even funny...
The scene of the little piggies drinking milk from their mother was upsetting. Almost 100 years later, I guess we are barely de-normalizing these old learnings as society.

Subject: New to me in full length.
Believe it or not, I've never seen the entire cartoon end-to-end before now and frankly, I'm very impressed!
I can only imagine the sound must have been added in a single take. To get every note and sound effect right on the button must have taken a LOT of rehearsal. I would love to see the music score.
Well done Disney! Even in the 21st century, we can still appreciate what you did back then.
Four stars because some of the action was a bit weird. Poking the pig's teats! Really?

Subject: An impressive cartoon (and it's mine)
Oh my God! The animation is in sync with the music! That's really impressive! I'm leaving a star because I don't like some of the animal abuse. Wonder where cartoon technology will go from here...

Subject: Air Pirates Live!
2024-pubic access for Everyone!
The original Air Pirates were a gang of Mickey Mouse antagonists of the 1930s; Dan O'Neill imagined Mickey Mouse to be a symbol of conformist hypocrisy in American culture, and therefore a ripe target for satire.
