Kaiser Permanente acquired the Georgetown Community Health Plan in 1980, and began working with existing community hospitals. In 1984, the region opened its first pharmacy and officially changed its name to Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States.

Kaiser Permanente’s history in the Pacific Northwest goes back to the medical group established to serve workers and their families during the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam in northeastern Washington in the late 1930s. During World War II, those physicians served workers and their families at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington. With the closing of the shipyards in 1945, enrollment wasopened to the community.
